The town was named after St. Sergius of Radonezh, a highly honored monk and the patron saint of Russia. In the XIV century he founded a monastery there that became one of the greatest in Russia.

Nowadays the monastery carries the name of Trinity Lavra of St. Sergey and is considered to be the spiritual center of Russian Orthodox Christianity, “Russian Vatican”. It’s a temporary residence of Russian patriarch.
