For 400 years the Novodevichy Convent was the witness and the participant of important historical events, connected with the names of Ivan the Terrible, Boris Godunov, Sofia and Peter I. It is known to have sheltered many ladies from the Russian royal families and boyar clans, who had been forced to take the veil. The focal point of the convent is a magnificent six-pillared five-domed cathedral, surrounded by other churches and historical buildings, dating from the 1680s.
