Primarily intended as an educational facility, the museum houses an extensive collection of ancient art and artifacts from the Ancient times to the New Age, including Egyptian, Assyrian, Ancient Greek and Roman pieces.
The core fine arts collection of the museum is made up by thousands of works that have been transferred there from St.-Petersburg.
The museum was established by the father of the famous Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva.
